USAID to help develop new agriculture program for Moldova

The Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ministry will launch a new programme on the development of horticulture in Moldova. The concept of the programme will be worked out till late 2018, with the support of development partners and a group of experts in the field.

The programme was considered at a meeting at the aforementioned ministry today, during which measures needed for carrying out the programme were identified. The plan’s goal is to set the priorities in the development of the sector, actions required to develop the present markets and to access new sales markets for Moldovan horticultural products.

“The document will put emphasis on opportunities of selling goods, producing qualitative fruits and vegetables, will include actions of strengthening the capacities of producers and processors, including the capacities of infrastructure – preservation, sorting, calibration and processing. We want this document of policies to provide a new approach in the sector’s development and to contribute to the enhancement of the competitiveness of products and services, to stimulate the attraction of investments and innovations, in order to meet the market’s requirements, as well as to contribute to the development of a sustainable agriculture,” Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Minister Nicolae Ciubuc said.

The official thanked the development partners for the support provided to elaborate the feasibility study, which presents the current situation in the horticulture sector on various chains: fruits, table grapes, vegetables and their derivatives.

The working out of the programme on development of horticulture in Moldova will be made with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), within the High Value Agriculture in Moldova project.
