The Government of the United States, acting through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), will increase by 29 million dollars the financing for the democratic governance and economic growth in Moldova. Prime Minister Maia Sandu and Assistant Administrator for USAID’s Bureau for Europe and Eurasia Brock Bierman signed two confirmation letters to this end today.
The financing scheduled for democratic governance will facilitate the creation of functional institutions and citizens’ involvement in taking decisions, will promote the optimization and transparency of the local administrations, will improve the access to municipal services and will promote the decentralization and the judicial reforms. Other key sectors are creation of friendly conditions for the civil society and mass media organizations.
The financing meant to contribute to the economic growth will promote an export-oriented economy, enhancement of competitiveness, creation of jobs and diversification of energy sources.
PM Maia Sandu praised the firm support of the U.S. Government for Moldova’s citizens. She noted that the cabinet would focus on the creation of functional institutions which fight against corruption, in order to improve the Moldovan citizens’ living standards. “We know that you trust the market economy and therefore, we learn from you how a truthful, competitive, with true competition market economy should be edified. We, just as the U.S. Government, are attached to the transparency of the decision-making process, to the freedom of the media, to the civil society’s participation in the decision-making process and independence of the local public authorities. We assure you that we will do our utmost for this support to be used as efficiently, transparently, correctly as possible, in the interest of all citizens of the country,” the prime minister said at a news conference.
For his part, Assistant Administrator for USAID’s Bureau for Europe and Eurasia Brock Bierman described the bilateral relations between Moldova and the USA as strong and productive. “The signing of these letters increase the financial support provided to Moldova to more than 96 million dollars since 2016. We have a long and valuable history of cooperation and we are willing to work with you in continuation. We are looking forward to the successful implementation of the projects and we will be here to back Moldova,” the official added.
