Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze met with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo today in Washington D.C.
Bakhtadze and Pompeo discussed the possibility of signing a free trade agreement between the US and Georgia.
“Mike Pompeo is a faithful friend of Georgia. I am grateful to him and his team for their support to our country. We discussed the challenge…of Russian occupation. We also spoke about the fields in which we could deepen our bilateral relations – security and economy. We would like to sign a free trade agreement with the US and we are supported by our US allies in this very important endeavor,” PM Bakhtadze told journalists after the meeting with Pompeo.
Following the meeting, Spokeswoman Heather Nauert opened a press conference by speaking about the strength of the US-Georgia bilateral relationship and emphasised that in spite of the Russian occupation, Georgia continues to reform its democratic institutions and develop its economy.
Bakhtadze will leave for New York today where he will deliver a speech to participants of the 73rd General Debate at a session of the UN General Assembly on September 27 and attend the opening ceremony of the session as well.
He is also invited to a reception organised by US President Donald Trump and his wife, which will be attended by the heads of governments attending the 73th session.
