Turkmenistan’s Foreign Ministry reports that on 13 June 2018 at the 72th session of the UN General Assembly Turkmenistan was elected as a member of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for 2019-2021.
The scope of ECOSOC activities includes promoting economic and social progress, including improving the standard of living and full employment, identifying solutions to international economic, social and health problems, facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation; and encouraging universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
ECOSOC, established by the UN Charter in 1946, is the principal body for addressing international economic and social problems and working out policy recommendations for member states and the UN agencies based on reports submitted by 11 foundations and the UN programs.
ECOSOC has 54 member Governments which are elected for three-year terms by the General Assembly. Eighteen countries are annually elected from regional groups, replacing on 1 January the countries with the expired term of office.
