Eni, through its local subsidiary ArmWind LLP, has been awarded a 50 MW photovoltaic project in the region of Turkestan, in southern Kazakhstan, as a result of an auction managed by the Kazakh authorities. The auction was implemented in the framework of a joint initiative of the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Italian company said in a press release.
Last September, Eni was awarded a 48 MW wind farm project, as an extension to the Badamsha 1 project, a 48 MW wind farm itself, which is currently under construction in the region of Aktobe, in western Kazakhstan.
This new award marks Eni’s entry into the solar sector of Kazakhstan. The project will be completed in the second half of 2021 and it will contribute to the progressive decarbonisation of the power sector of the country. The new plant will allow for a greenhouse gases emissions reduction of 1.2 million tons of CO2 equivalent over the lifetime of the plant.
Eni has been present in Kazakhstan since 1992. Eni is joint operator of the Karachaganak field and is an equity partner in various projects in the Northern Caspian Sea, including the giant Kashagan field. Eni is the joint subsoil user and joint operator of the offshore exploration blocks Isatay and Abay. Equity production is currently 180,000 barrel of oil equivalent per day.
