Georgia, Germany to sign agreements worth €193 mln on underground gas storage facility, developing modern sewage system

Two agreements will be signed worth €193 million between Georgia and Germany during German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to Georgia. One agreement will be about constructing an underground gas storage facility in Georgia and the other to develop a modern sewage system in the country.
Merkel, who is visiting Georgia 10 years later once again, said at today’s press-conference with Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze that Georgia is following a “very well-guided economic path”.
“Economic growth in Georgia is obvious… I think we can cooperate in various fields. The Prime Minister also noted that cooperation between small and medium sized business of the two countries is important. Economic ministers of the two countries should held meetings often. Our cooperation should become more intensive, we should share our experiences with each other”, said Merkel.
Merkel also stated that Georgia can export agricultural products to the EU and German can contribute to this process heavily. As Merkel is accompanied by German businesspersons, business and economic topics are also high on the agenda.
On August 23-24 a round-table meeting will be held between Georgian business community and Georgian companies’ representatives.
“We welcome the activities of all German companies in Georgia. Along with successful projects, we have a desire to further develop bilateral cooperation more effectively, to see more German investment in Georgia and in parallel with large German companies to develop relationships between small and medium businesses”, said Bakhtadze.
Bakhtadze said that Georgia has the potential to become a regional hub for those countries which do not have access to the sea. “It is a unique perspective and opportunity for German companies to increase trade not only with Georgia, but in general, with the entire region. It is important that with the German Chancellor are representatives of German companies in Georgia, which once again proves that interest towards Georgia’s economic potential is increasing”.
Bakhtadze recalled the start of successful cooperation between the German railway company Deutsche Bahn and Georgian Railway and said he was proud of the negotiations as he was the head of the Georgian Railway at that time.
To note, Deutsche Bahn and Georgian Railway entered a new stage of cooperation and signed an agreement this June, which laid the foundation for future joint projects in the rail freight sector.
“Today Deutsche Bahn is an official partner of Georgian Railway which means that the Georgian economy has gained a very strong and reliable partner on the EU territory”, Bakhtadze said.
Germany is an important trade partner of Georgia. During the first seven months of 2018 Georgia’s export to Germany increased about 20 percent, official data reports.
