EU4Energy launches public talks to facilitate energy efficiency reforms in Moldova

On 29 March, the Energy Community organised the first high-level policy talks on energy efficiency in the Moldovan capital of Chisinau, with the support of the EU4Energy Governance project. The event brought together representatives of the government, parliament, the energy industry, international financial institutions and civil society.

Experts from the Energy Community Secretariat shared their knowledge and expertise to support the Moldovan authorities with the fulfilment of their commitments to energy efficiency under the Energy Community Treaty.

Speaking at the event, the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, Ambassador Peter Michalko said: “The EU is a strong supporter of the Republic of Moldova in the process of the modernisation of its energy sector. We are doing this as we believe that changes in the energy sector can have a major impact on the improvement of the quality of life of Moldovan citizens, which is the final goal of our assistance in this country.”

“As all the norms of European energy law which Moldova committed to implement as a member of the Energy Community, those related to energy efficiency serve a meaningful purpose,” underlined the Director of the Energy Community Secretariat, Janez Kopac. “Increased energy efficiency is in the direct interest of consumers. The State and all its institutions must lead this process by example.”

The event is part of the EU4Energy initiative of the European Union. EU4Energy covers all EU support to improve energy supply, security and connectivity, as well as to promote energy efficiency and the use of renewables in the Eastern Partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine). It does this by financing projects and programmes that help to reform energy markets and to reduce national energy dependence and consumption. Over the long term, this makes energy supply more reliable, transparent and affordable, thus reducing energy poverty and energy bills for both citizens and the private sector. The Energy Community Secretariat is an implementing partner responsible for delivering technical assistance to Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.
