EU, Ukraine launch five projects on decentralization of local government

The European Union and some cities and regions of Ukraine agreed on the implementation of joint projects in support of the decentralization of local authorities.

The relevant agreements were reached under the auspices of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) and the European Commission on Thursday.

“The European Union is strengthening its support for local and regional authorities in Ukraine. The EU has launched five partnership projects between Ukraine and the EU regions and cities,” the CoR reported.

Local communities from Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania and Poland plan to join the projects.

Ukraine’s local authorities and communities already joined the initiative. The Ukrainian cities and regions submitted relevant proposals for projects the implementation of which they are interested.

The projects will be aimed at developing economic plans, training local government officials, the issues of education, health and culture, as well as supporting rural areas, small and medium-sized enterprises, and tourism development.

The European Commission will finance these projects.
