Azerbaijan joins International Energy Charter

H.E. Parviz Shahbazov Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan signed the International Energy Charter. Azerbaijan becomes the 88th  country or international organisation to sign the International Energy Charter, which is a declaration of political intention aiming at strengthening energy cooperation.

Energy Charter Secretary-General, Dr Urban Rusnák welcomed the signature and remarked on the country’s long involvement with the Energy Charter Process. Azerbaijan was one of the original signatories of the Energy Charter Treaty of 1994 which it ratified in 1997.

The International Energy Charter promotes mutually beneficial energy cooperation among nations for the sake of energy security and sustainability. The International Energy Charter thus fits well into the global policy agenda reflected, for instance, in the G20 Leaders’ Communiqué of the Brisbane Summit in November 2014 and the UN Document “The Future We Want” endorsed by the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in June 2012.
