On October 27, Lika Merabishvili, Regional Director for Caucasus at StrategEast delivered a speech at the “Securing Democracy in the Digital Age” conference during the Moldova DemTech Conference and Hackathon.
The focus of her discussion revolved around the exceptional progress of Georgia’s IT industry since 2020 when the country implemented a new tax regime aimed at attracting international IT companies. Her presentation, “IT Industry in Georgia: The Great Leap Forward,” offered valuable insights into the stunning growth of the Georgian IT sector.
In her speech, Merabishvili pointed out that since the introduction of the new tax regime, Georgia’s IT industry has made substantial strides. The first quarter of 2023 witnessed a remarkable achievement, with the country generating an impressive income of $231 million from IT services. This remarkable feat underscores the rapid and robust development of the IT sector in Georgia.
The event, hosted on October 27-28, was a collaborative effort of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Moldova, the Alliance of Democracies, the Hanns Seidel Foundation Moldova, and the Eastern European Center for Multiparty Democracy (EECMD).
The conference, titled “Securing Democracy in the Digital Age,” provided a platform for discussions on digital solutions, with a particular focus on the lessons learned from Ukraine and Georgia. Merabishvili’s speech shed light on the pivotal role that favorable tax regulations and investment-friendly policies play in fostering the growth of IT industries in emerging democracies.
