EU launches two new local development projects to support SMEs in Georgian Mestia

The EU has launched two large development projects under the motto “EU in Svaneti”. The projects are designed and supported by the European Union, the Embassy of Sweden and the Austrian Development Cooperation.

The first project, entitled “GRETA”, will support Georgian small and medium-sized enterprises. It will also facilitate an improvement of the business environment and the creation of new income opportunities in the two growth sectors of Georgia – mountain tourism and organic agriculture.

The second project (“Implementing LEADER in Mestia municipality for better livelihoods in high mountainous regions of Georgia”) aims to improve livelihoods of vulnerable households in remote, high mountainous regions of Georgia and support their economic and social well-being by applying the European LEADER approach.

“In the coming years we aim to contribute towards sustainable rural development and the creation of long-lasting jobs in Svaneti,” said Vincent Rey, Head of Cooperation of the EU Delegation to Georgia. “Our final goal is to improve citizens’ lives in this mountainous region.”
