Finnish Elisa receives €100 million from Nordic Investment Bank to develop 5G grid in Estonia, Finland

The Finnish telecommunications company Elisa has taken a loan amounting to 100 million euros from the Nordic Investment Bank to develop its 5G networks in Finland and in Estonia.

“The loan to Elisa facilitates the expansion of 5G infrastructure in Finland and in Estonia. Investments in 5G are vital for the productivity of the Nordic–Baltic companies, as the new mobile network generates the knowledge accumulation in our member region’s technology sector,” said Henrik Normann, NIB’s president and CEO.

Elisa’s investment volumes are the largest among Finnish telecommunication operators, the company yearly invests over 200 mln euros in its telecommunications infrastructure in Finland. In the coming years, investments are particularly targeted at establishing a 5G grid, which will start at the beginning of 2019.

NIB is an international financial institution owned by eight member countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden. The bank finances private and public projects in and outside the member countries.
