The Norwegian developer’s first solar project in the eastern European country is planned to help the region of Cherkasy reduce its energy shortage.
Exactly a year after confirming its plans to invest in large-scale PV projects in Ukraine, the Norwegian developer Scatec Solar ASA has moved forward with its first project, a 25 MW solar park in the Cherkasy region, in the central part of the country.
According to a press release from the regional government, the company has presented the project to the local authorities during a meeting which included the local governor, Yuriy Tkachenko, the vice-president of project development of Scatec Solar ASA, Anne-Marie Lillieard, and representatives of the local power provider Cherkasyoblenergo OJSC.
The governor Tkachenko has stressed that the new power plant will help reduce its strong energy shortage. “last year, power production in our region reached 1.77 billion kWh, while consumption was 3.185 billion kWh,” he explained. “We plan to start construction on the facility in the near future”, added Lillieard without providing further details.
In March of last year, the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine revealed that Scatec was planning to build two large-scale PV projects totaling 60 MW in Ukraine.
Ukraine on the other hand, still remains one of the most attractive eastern European solar markets thanks to its FIT scheme that is granting for ground-mounted PV projects connected to the grid between 2017 and 2019 a tariff of €0.1502 ($0.1863)/kWh.
