Moldova is an Eastern European country and former Soviet republic, bordered by Romania and Ukraine. It emerged as an independent republic following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe, with its economy relying heavily on its agriculture sector, featuring fruits, vegetables, wine, and tobacco.

Moldova also depends on annual remittances of about $1.12 billion from the roughly one million Moldovans working in Europe, Russia, and other former Soviet Bloc countries. Two-thirds of Moldovans are of Romanian descent. The languages are virtually identical and the two countries share a common cultural heritage.

Moldova is a parliamentary constitutional republic. The capital city is Chisinau, country’s population is 3 million (75.1% Moldovan, 7% Romanian, 6.6% Ukrainian, 4.6% Gagauz, 4.1% Russian).
