Georgia, a country at the intersection of Europe and Asia, is a former Soviet republic. It is bounded to the west by the Black Sea, neighboring to Russia,Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Following the Russian Revolution in 1917, Georgia obtained its short-lived independence and established a republic. It was invaded by Soviet Russia in 1921 and absorbed into the Soviet Union. A pro-independence movement led to the secession from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Georgia, a unitary, semi-presidential republic, pursues a strongly pro-Western foreign policy, aiming at NATO and European integration. It contains two de facto independent regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, supported by Russia.

Georgia’s capital and largest city is Tbilisi. Country’s population is 3.72 million (86.8%Georgian, 6.2% Azerbaijani, 4.5% Armenian).
